Instagram Reels: post types, limits, discovery and how to post
Instagram is four surfaces in one app — Reels, feed, stories, Explore — and each one treats your post differently. Here's the map for short-form operators: what to post where, the 2026 originality rules, and how reach is actually assigned.

Platform facts checked against Instagram's own help pages and announcements, August 2026.
Instagram matters for short-form because Reels has real cold reach and the rest of the app has the warmest audience of any platform: people who follow you actually see you in stories and DMs. It is also the platform that changed the most in the last eighteen months, mostly around one word: originality.
Post types
| Type | On Instagram | Through VidVertex |
|---|---|---|
| Reel (video) | 9:16 feed video, recommended in Reels and Explore | Yes — rendered per brand |
| Carousel | 2–20 images (or mixed) swiped in the feed; 4:5 is the native feed shape | Yes — image carousel |
| Story | 24-hour vertical image or video, followers only | Yes — one image or video, no caption |
| Text post | Not a format (that's Threads) | No |
| Photo post | Single feed image | No (carousel with one slide isn't a thing here) |
Formats, lengths, limits
- Reels: 9:16, 1080 × 1920. Up to 3 minutes in the app (raised in January 2025); the sweet spot for recommendation is still well under a minute. Longer uploads can be published as video but may be treated differently in Reels surfaces.
- Carousels: up to 20 slides. Feed shows 4:5; a 9:16 slide gets cropped in the grid, so design carousels at 4:5 if Instagram is the main target (post formats).
- Stories: 9:16, video segments of up to 60 seconds.
- Captions: long, but only the first line shows before "more".
- Cover: pick a frame or upload a cover image; VidVertex sends the cover timestamp you choose (cover frame).
- Safe zones: the bottom caption block and right rail on Reels, plus the profile grid crop — safe zones.
Offer Desk ·Instagram ReelsHow discovery works here
Reels are recommended in the Reels tab and Explore by the same test-and- expand loop as everywhere (how it works): watch time, replays, shares, saves and sends to friends — Instagram has said sends weigh heavily. Followers see your Reels in the feed as well, which makes Instagram the platform where an existing audience helps most.
Two official things to know:
- Account Status (Settings → Account → Account Status) shows whether your content is eligible to be recommended, which posts are holding you back, and lets you request a review (platform messages decoded).
- Originality. Since 2025 Instagram limits reach for accounts that repeatedly post content they didn't create, labels reposts and points to the original; on 30 April 2026 it extended that from Reels to photos and carousels and put it plainly: an account that mostly posts someone else's content is not recommendable, assessed over a rolling month, and watermarks, crops or credits don't count as originality (what that means for you).
Five pages posting the same Reel is exactly the pattern the April 2026 rule was written against. Per-page variants — own hook, own captions, own cut — are the difference between a roster and a mirror farm.
Monetization, as of August 2026
Bonus programs on Instagram come and go and are invite-based. Plan the page around what the audience does — DMs, the link in bio, a product — not around a payout.
- No general ad-revenue share for Reels.
- Subscriptions, gifts on Reels, branded content / Creator Marketplace, affiliate and shop tags are the working lanes, all tied to a professional account.
- The honest version for operators: what the audience does off the platform pays better than the platform does (views to product).
Typical mistakes
- Reposting your TikTok with the watermark. Instagram has deprioritized visibly recycled Reels for years; in 2026 it's part of the originality assessment.
- Mirror accounts. Variants per page, not copies.
- Designing carousels at 9:16. They crop in the feed and the grid.
- Stories as a growth tool. Stories reach followers, not strangers; they bind, they don't build.
- Ignoring Account Status. It's the one place the platform tells you what's wrong, and most people never open it.
- Posting from a personal account. It is the cheapest thing on this list to fix and the one most people skip.
How to post it
Use a professional account. Insights, the Account Status detail and the commercial music library all hang off it — a personal account sees none of the three.
In the app: + → Reel, upload, trim, audio, cover, caption with the topic up front, share to feed on, post. Stories from + → Story. Carousels from + → Post with multiple images.
With VidVertex: enable the Instagram channel on the brand (brands & platforms), render — the Instagram variant carries the brand's caption style, hook and assets — and schedule. The Zernio API posts Reels (shown on feed), carousels and stories directly, with the cover timestamp; the Metricool modes hand the media over through your Google Drive — the API mode posts it, the CSV mode writes an import file (upload modes). A story stack is its own post type — one image or video, no caption (post types).
