Snapchat Spotlight: post types, limits, discovery and how to post

Spotlight is Snapchat's short-form feed — younger audience, less competition from professional pages, and one hard requirement most tools don't mention: you need a Public Profile before anything can be scheduled there. Here's the setup, the limits and how reach works.

NOTE

Platform facts checked against Snapchat's own help pages, August 2026. Scheduling facts reflect what Zernio supports at that date.

Snapchat is easy to leave off the roster and often worth keeping on it: the Spotlight audience skews young, watches a lot, and sees far fewer operator-run pages than TikTok does. The catch is that Snapchat was built around private sharing, so publishing to the world is a separate mode.

Post types

Type On Snapchat Through VidVertex
Spotlight (video) Vertical feed video, recommended to strangers Yes — rendered per brand
Public Story 24-hour story on a Public Profile, followers only Yes — story stack, one image or video, no caption
Saved Stories, Lenses, Chat In-app No
Text post / Carousel Not formats No

No text posts and no carousels: a rendered video goes to Spotlight, a story stack posts a 24-hour story.

Public Profileaccount type
  • Public Profile required. Spotlight posting through the API needs a Snapchat Public Profile (Snapchat's creator/business profile type). A personal account can't be scheduled to.
  • Length through Zernio: 5 to 60 seconds per Spotlight video. Snapchat's own app accepts longer Spotlight clips, but the scheduling route is the one that matters for a batch — keep renders inside the window, or the post is refused.
  • Format: 9:16, 1080 × 1920, full-screen vertical only.
  • Text: a short description; Spotlight shows little text on the video, so the clip has to carry itself — burned-in captions and a hook on the video (captions & retention).
  • Safe zones: bottom block with profile and description, right-hand actions — safe zones.
  • Scheduling tools: Zernio supports Spotlight — through its API mode, since the bulk CSV has no Snapchat content-type column and would import a video as an expiring story; those rows are skipped with a pointer instead. Metricool has no Snapchat network, so VidVertex's Metricool modes skip Snapchat rows and say so (upload modes).

How discovery works here

Spotlight is a recommendation feed with the familiar loop (how it works): watch time and completion first, then shares and favorites. Followers of the Public Profile see your Spotlights and Public Stories, but the bulk of Spotlight reach is cold. Snapchat's community guidelines apply, and Spotlight has its own content guidelines (original, advertiser-friendly, no watermarks from other apps) that decide whether a clip is shown broadly.

WARNING

Two things refuse a post here before anything else: no Public Profile, and a render outside the 5–60 second window. Both are settings you fix once, per brand.

Monetization, as of August 2026

  • Snapchat's Monetization Program shares ad revenue on Spotlight videos and Public Stories with invited creators. Eligibility includes a large follower count, a view-time threshold over 28 days, original advertiser-friendly public content and a compliant account; Snapchat adjusted the thresholds again in May 2026, and meeting them doesn't guarantee an invitation. The current numbers are on Snapchat's help pages.
NOTE

For most operators this is a reach play, not a payout: a Spotlight audience that follows the Public Profile and carries over to your other surfaces.

Typical mistakes

  • No Public Profile. The scheduling route has nothing to post to.
  • Renders outside 5–60 seconds. Refused at upload through Zernio.
  • Other apps' watermarks. Spotlight's guidelines exclude them from broad distribution.
  • Expecting the Metricool path to cover it. It doesn't; Snapchat goes through Zernio only.
  • Text-heavy captions. Nobody reads them here; put the words on the video.

How to post it

In the app: create a Public Profile (Profile → Public Profile → Create), then post a vertical video to Spotlight from the camera or camera roll, add a description, post. Spotlight insights live on the Public Profile.

With VidVertex: enable the Snapchat channel on the brand (brands & platforms) with its Zernio account connected to the Public Profile, render — the Snapchat variant carries the brand's captions and hook on the video — and schedule in the Zernio API mode. Pre-flight warns about duration and size before the run (pre-flight) — including a description longer than the 160 characters Spotlight shows; text and carousel stacks leave Snapchat out and name it (post types).
