X (Twitter) video: post types, limits, discovery and how to post
X is a text platform that happens to play video well. For a short-form operator that flips the usual logic: the words are the post, the clip is the proof, and the feed rewards conversation over completion. Here's what to post, the limits that depend on your subscription, and how reach works.

Platform facts checked against X's own help pages, August 2026. Several limits depend on whether the account has a Premium subscription.
X is the one platform in the roster where a video without a line of text above it is a mistake. Its feed is built around posts people reply to and repost; the video is what makes the post stop the scroll.
Post types
| Type | On X | Through VidVertex |
|---|---|---|
| Video post | Video with text above it | Yes — rendered per brand |
| Text post | The native format | Yes — text stack, up to 4 images |
| Carousel | Multiple images in one post (up to 4) | Yes — image carousel |
| Story | Not a format | No |
| Spaces, Articles, Live | In-app | No |
Formats, lengths, limits
- Video length: 140 seconds for standard accounts; Premium subscriptions allow much longer uploads. VidVertex's pre-flight warns above the standard limit so a longer render is a decision, not a surprise (pre-flight).
- Format: 9:16 plays full-height in the immersive video feed; 16:9 and 1:1 are also native. 1080 × 1920 works.
- Text length: 280 characters for standard accounts; Premium allows long posts. Treat 280 as the design limit anyway — the feed shows the first lines.
- Images: up to 4 per post.
- Safe zones: the immersive video view overlays text and controls at the bottom — safe zones.
Pricing Lab ·XHow discovery works here
Two feeds: Following (chronological-ish, people you follow) and For You (recommended). For You is a test-and-expand loop like the others (how it works), but the signals are conversational: replies, reposts, quote posts, profile clicks and dwell time matter alongside video watch time (views but zero engagement).
Write the line first, attach the clip second. A video post with a claim or a question gets replied to; a bare video gets watched and forgotten.
Video also has its own immersive feed (swipe through full-screen video), which is the closest thing X has to a Shorts shelf. Premium accounts get a visibility boost in replies and recommendations; that's documented by X, not folklore.
Monetization, as of August 2026
- Creator revenue sharing — available to Premium subscribers who meet impression and follower thresholds; paid on engagement from other Premium users rather than on raw views. Numbers and rules are on X's help pages and have changed more than once.
- Subscriptions (paid follower tiers) for eligible creators.
- Realistically, X earns most operators through what the audience does: links, products, a newsletter (views to product).
Typical mistakes
- Posting a video with no text. On X the text is the post.
- Exceeding 140 seconds without Premium. The upload fails or the post doesn't go.
- Hashtag soup. X rewards replies, not tags; one or two relevant tags at most (hashtags).
- The same caption as TikTok. Emoji-only captions die here; a claim or a question lives.
- Ignoring replies. The first hour of replies is half the reach.
How to post it
Exceeding 140 seconds without Premium is the one hard failure here — the upload doesn't go. Emoji-only captions are the soft one.
In the app: compose, attach the video (or up to four images), write the line, post. Threads (a post with replies from you) extend reach for longer thoughts.
With VidVertex: enable the X channel on the brand (brands & platforms) and render; the X variant gets its own platform text — description only, X has no separate title (post texts). The Zernio API posts video, text-with-images and carousels directly; the Metricool modes hand the media over through your Google Drive — the API mode posts it, the CSV mode writes an import file (upload modes). A text stack is the natural way to give the words from your hooks and scripts a second life here (repurposing).
