YouTube Shorts: post types, limits, discovery and how to post

Shorts are short-form with a long tail: the same clip that dies in a day elsewhere can keep collecting views for months here. Here's what YouTube takes, how the Shorts shelf decides, what changed about view counts in August 2026, and the settings that quietly break reach.

NOTE

Platform facts checked against YouTube's own help pages, August 2026.

YouTube is the odd one out in the roster: a search engine with a feed bolted on. Shorts get the feed treatment — test group, expand or stop — but they also live inside a channel with subscribers, search and a recommendation system that doesn't forget. That's why Shorts are the slowest platform to start and the one most worth keeping.

Post types

Type On YouTube Through VidVertex
Short (video) Vertical video up to 3 minutes, in the Shorts shelf Yes — rendered per brand
Long-form video Horizontal or any length No (outside the roster)
Community post Text, image, poll to subscribers No
Carousel Not a format No
Story Discontinued No

YouTube is video only as far as VidVertex is concerned: one rendered Short per brand.

  • Length: a vertical (or square) video up to 3 minutes is a Short (raised from 60 seconds in October 2024). Above that it's a regular video.
  • Format: 9:16, 1080 × 1920. No custom thumbnail for Shorts via upload tools — the cover is a frame, which is why VidVertex deliberately doesn't send a thumbnail here (cover frame).
  • Title is the visible text in the shelf — short and specific; the description carries the keywords.
  • Audience setting: every upload must be marked "made for kids" or not. This one matters — see mistakes.
  • Safe zones: bottom block with title and channel, right rail — safe zones.

How discovery works here

Three surfaces, in order of weight for a new page:

  1. The Shorts shelf — the feed. Test-and-expand like everywhere (how it works), with "viewed vs. swiped away" as the headline signal in YouTube's own analytics.
  2. Search and suggested — the long tail. A Short with a clear title and description keeps being found. This is where Shorts differ from TikTok: old uploads aren't dead.
  3. Subscribers — the Shorts shelf and the subscriptions feed.
FACT

View counting changed on 24 August 2026. Public view counts on every format now tick the moment a video starts playing (Shorts switched to that in March 2025; the rest followed). The old definition — watched past the first frame or clicked to play — is now called an engaged view and is what monetization and eligibility are based on. Public numbers are higher and less meaningful; read engaged views in Studio when judging a video (reading analytics).

TIP

The search tail is the reason to write a real title and description here. On TikTok an old upload is done; on YouTube it is still being found.

  • YouTube Partner Program with Shorts ad revenue share. The Shorts route requires a subscriber threshold plus a public Shorts view threshold over 90 days (engaged views); the long-form route uses watch hours. Exact numbers are on YouTube's help pages and get revised.
  • Reused content and repetitious content policies apply at the channel level — a channel of unedited reposts is rejected or removed from the program, which is the YouTube version of the originality rule (duplicate content).
  • Memberships, Super Thanks and brand deals on top, once in the program.

Typical mistakes

WARNING

"made for kids" on a Short that isn't disables comments and most personalization — near-zero recommendation. Check the channel default and each upload.

  • No title. Shorts uploaded from a phone get the caption as title; through tools the title is a separate field. Empty or generic titles throw away the search tail.
  • Treating it like TikTok pacing. Shorts viewers tolerate a beat more context; a clean ending and a reason to open the channel matter more.
  • Expecting day-one numbers. Shorts often start slower and keep going. Judge over weeks.
  • Mass-uploading the same clip across channels. Reused-content policy territory.

How to post it

In the app or Studio: upload a vertical video under 3 minutes and it becomes a Short automatically; title, description, audience setting, visibility public. Studio shows the Shorts shelf performance, the "viewed vs. swiped away" ratio and any limits on the video.

With VidVertex: enable the YouTube channel on the brand (brands & platforms), render — the YouTube variant gets the brand's caption style and assets; the title and description come from the stack's post texts per platform (post texts) — and schedule. The Zernio API publishes directly; the Metricool modes hand the media over through your Google Drive — the API mode posts it, the CSV mode writes an import file (upload modes). Text, carousel and story stacks skip YouTube by design and say so before the run (post types).
