Pinterest video pins: post types, limits, discovery and how to post

Pinterest isn't a feed, it's a search engine with pictures — which makes it the one platform where a short video keeps working for months instead of hours. Here's what a video pin is, what it needs, and why it behaves nothing like TikTok.

NOTE

Platform facts checked against Pinterest's own help pages, August 2026.

People come to Pinterest to plan and look for things, not to kill time. That changes every rule of short-form: the hook matters less than the title, the first second matters less than the cover, and today's post is a small part of what the account earns in reach this year.

Post types

Type On Pinterest Through VidVertex
Video pin A vertical video saved to a board Yes — rendered per brand
Image pin A single image No
Carousel Not in the roster — one media item per pin through the scheduling route No
Text post / Story Not formats No
Boards, collages Organization, in-app No

Pinterest is video-only in VidVertex: one video pin per brand, saved to the board the Zernio or Metricool account is set up for.

  • Length: Pinterest accepts long video pins (up to around fifteen minutes), but the format that gets saved and clicked is short — under a minute, often much less.
  • Format: 9:16 (1080 × 1920) or 2:3 are the native shapes; 9:16 renders fill the mobile view.
  • Title and description: the important fields. A title that says what the pin is ("10-minute desk stretch routine") is the search entry point; the description carries context and keywords. The link field points to your site or product.
  • Cover: the cover frame is what shows in search and boards; pick a legible one (cover frame).
  • Safe zones: minimal overlay, but the bottom carries the title card in some views — safe zones.

How discovery works here

TIP

Write the title like a search query, not like a caption. "10-minute desk stretch routine" finds people; "POV" finds nobody.

Search and the home feed, both driven by what the pin is about rather than how the first test group reacted. Pinterest reads the title, the description, the board name, the text it can detect on the video and the link's domain, and matches the pin to searches and to people who saved similar things. Saves are the core signal — a pin that gets saved to boards keeps being redistributed.

FACT

Pins surface for weeks and months. A steady stream of well-titled pins compounds; a viral burst means little. Pinterest also states openly that it favors original content and demotes spammy repetition — the same clip pinned ten times with different titles is the thing to avoid.

Monetization, as of August 2026

  • No creator payout program. Pinterest ended its creator rewards program in 2023; there is no revenue share for views.
  • The link is the product. Pinterest is the platform in the roster most likely to send actual clicks to a shop or a page — affiliate links (disclosed), product pins for merchants, your own site (affiliate short-form, organic dropshipping).
  • Pinterest's paid-partnership and affiliate rules apply: disclose, and don't cloak links.

Typical mistakes

WARNING

The one platform in the roster that sends real clicks, and the link field is the one people leave empty. Fill it, and give the pin a board with a name that means something.

  • TikTok captions as pin titles. "POV: 😭" finds nobody here.
  • Treating it like a feed. Judging a pin after 24 hours throws away the months it has left.
  • Duplicate pins with swapped titles. Reads as spam to Pinterest and to people browsing a board.

How to post it

In the app: + → Pin, upload the video, title, description, link, choose a board, publish.

With VidVertex: enable the Pinterest channel on the brand (brands & platforms), render, and give the Pinterest variant a real title and description in the platform texts — this is the one platform where the title is doing most of the work (post texts). The Zernio API posts the video pin directly; the Metricool modes hand the media over through your Google Drive — the API mode posts it, the CSV mode writes an import file (upload modes). Text, carousel and story stacks skip Pinterest and name it before the run.
