License & updates
"License invalid" after a hardware change or reinstall of Windows. The license is bound to a machine fingerprint. A reinstall can look like a new device — if both slots are used, deactivate the old entry (Settings → User profile, or the customer portal) and activate again.
Does updating the app cost a device slot? No. Updates on the same machine keep the same activation.
I'm offline a lot. Short offline stretches are covered by a grace period of three days. The app re-validates when you're back online. (Rolling the system clock back does not extend the grace period.)
The update check shows an error. The dialog names the reason in plain words. "Not licensed" means the check is only offered to a valid license; a server-side reason is ours to fix — the app keeps working either way, and the check runs again daily.
A license covers two devices — a desktop and a laptop, say. Deactivating an old entry frees its slot immediately, under Settings → User profile or in the customer portal.
